Harajuku Lovers Summer 2008 Collection

Space Age by Gwen Stefani
Harajuku Lovers is the name of a designer brand of apparel, fashion accessories, and (formerly) stationery of singer Gwen Stefani launched in 2005. The concept for Harajuku Lovers revolves around the Shibuya, Tokyo area of Harajuku and the four Harajuku girls; Gwen Stefani’s Japanese back-up dancers and entourage, Love, Angel, Music, and Baby. Unlike Stefani’s previous fashion line, L.A.M.B., which aimed for a more mainstream demographic, Harajuku Lovers instead tends to focus specifically on Stefani’s fan base. Kawaii depictions of Stefani and her dancers are common features of the products as is the kanji logo. Clothing for the line is produced and licensed by Jerry Leigh with stationery line produced and licensed by Nakajima USA.

Ivana Helsinki Collection now available at Spoiledbrat

Beginning mid-century, Scandinavia set the stage for modern minimalist design marked by functionality. While Sweden and Denmark cornered industrial design, Finland found a fit with textiles and has provided decades of invigorating solutions to the medium. Today, a modest outfit called Ivana Helsinki carries on the tradition, turning out a spectrum of offerings (from womenswear to bedding), which echoes the country’s long love affair with brilliant textiles. When Marimekko applied vibrant colors and non-figurative shapes to oilcloth, fashioning the fabric into dresses in 1952, it virtually changed the way printing was done and resulted in a commercial frenzy. Half a century later, Ivana Helsinki represents a new brand of modern Finnish design, noting a similar aesthetic to its iconic predecessors.
Ivana Helsinki is not an actual person but rather a fictional character created by designer Paola Suhonen. Suhonen, who is trained in fashion design, also created a fictional history for the brand based on a Russian manufacturer, Paolo Ivanski, who moved to Helsinki in 1938 to open the world’s most northern match factory and who adored escaping on weekends to go camping with co-workers. The reality of Ivana Helsinki is not so far off. A family-run company (Paola’s sister, Pirjo, is in charge of marketing), IH consists of only eight people, all Finnish and all dedicated to the slow design approach.
Not surprising, Ivanski’s “camping” spirit permeates all reaches of the Helsinki world. Old photographs from nature excursions pepper the site, leaving one to wonder whether the images are of actual employees or those of an old story. As for the clothes, tough cotton jackets are well-suited for the modern adventurer with thoughtfully placed pockets and smart tailored seams. Dresses and tops merge practicality with a fresh, childlike sweetness (no trousers here).
Every year, IH presents a collection of assorted prints, mostly monochromatic, hand-drawn, and single-subject and all hand-printed. Potent green speed boats, brown camp tents, pink cats, and Russian dolls awaken dresses and bikinis, shirts and jackets, handbags and coin purses, even plates and trays in a new line titled Hemma (Finnish for “home”). It features bedding, slippers, and other no-nonsense housewares all printed to coordinate with the apparel collection.
Better still, Ivana Helsinki upholds an ethical, progressive practice with all products crafted by hand in Finland; no chemical dyes, fur, or leather are used. According to Suhonen, “the clothes are full of positive melancholy and hope of tomorrow,” but thankfully those wishing to wear their affection for design on their sleeve, get to enjoy them today.
Ivana Helsinki, a family company well known for their ethically handmade avant-garde prints, is apart of the slow design identity & contemporary Finnish design movement. Their work, style and spirit, is a great inspiration and an icon in the Fennofolk tradition. Everything they make is done with great care and thought, utilizing local resources such as employing skilled handiworkers.
“Fennofolkists manifesto: If something is too perfect, it is not perfect anymore, it is boring. There has to be some edge to grab on. There always has to be something unexpected, weird and absurd. Something that should not be there.”
Made by hand in Finland. Click here to shop Ivana Helsinki!

Bejeweled, by Susan Fixel available at SpoiledBrat

Relying on her instincts and innate sense of design, Susan Fixel has set clothing trends for more than twenty years. Fixel’s newest endeavor, Bejeweled, combines her deep interest in the rock-and-roll influence on fashion with her passion for lush fabrics and beautiful embellishments.

Entirely self-taught, Susan Fixel mastered her trade in the field. Working her way through every facet of design and production, from oversees knitting mills in Asia to selling in retail showrooms in the States. In between, she scoured European fabric markets and design trade shows, always searching for her next flash of inspiration. In 1979, long before Reebok and Nike had tapped into the massive potential of the active-wear market, Fixel and her husband partnered in establishing “Softouch”, one of the leading workout clothing companies of the 1980’s, with Susan in charge of design. “I had just had a child, and I was looking for clothes to work out in and there was nothing,” Fixel says. “No one else was making such things. That’s always how I am. If someone else is doing it already, I don’t want to do it.”“I was coming back on an airplane from New York, flipping through a magazine, Fixel recalls. “I was seeing all these unbelievable Chopard watches, with these magnificent crystals and diamonds, and I thought, ‘There has got to be a way I can reinterpret these onto clothing’.”She wasted no time: “I came home and hit the computer, looking for graphics to embellish.” Fixel was especially drawn to the emblematic flourishes of biker jackets and the Gothic ornament of concert tees.
Thus was born Bejeweled. Money-cautious friends advised Fixel to keep her budding clothing line as a hobby.. However, her early customers were clamoring for samples faster than Fixel could create them. As a result, Fixel took her inspiration to the next level. Since then, Bejeweled has blossomed into a multi-million dollar label with 30 employees, operating out of Weston, FL near Ft. Lauderdale.A truly creative spirit, the tireless Fixel travels throughout Europe and the United States 40 weeks out of the year, taking off whenever the muse calls, always on the lookout for the future of style. “I don’t stay put for too long,” Fixel says, “I spend my extra time always looking for the next trend. It’s quite unpredictable – influenced by people, places, perceptions, and events that are random and unforeseen.”

The world’s most fashionable celebrities including Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Jennifer Aniston, Kate Beckinsale, Shakira, Pilar Montenegro and Sharon Stone are among those who love and wear the Bejeweled by Susan Fixel trendsetting styles. Inspired by Fixel’s love of rock-and-roll style, the collection combines a tough, urban aesthetic, of skulls, daggers and coat of arms with embellished flowers and hearts, creating a product that is both edgy and chic. Since comfort is of utmost importance in the Bejeweled collection, each style is created from soft, natural fabrics.
Bejeweled clothing is now available online in the UK, at SpoiledBrat.co.uk

Boys Meets Girl Clothing at SpoiledBrat

Designer Stacy Morgenstern has had a clear vision of her career path since nursery school, where she outfitted her pre–K classmates with make–shift designs and home–made charm bracelets. She honed these skills further at UW–Madison where she triple-majored in Fashion Design, Retail and Business. Ms. Morgenstern laid the groundwork for her own company’s success by designing at mega-brand Izod as well as working closely with innovative designers and icons such as Zandra Rhodes, Elie Tahari and Elsa Klensch.
Ms. Morgenstern’s original Deesh collection showed great depth and range — from cozy cashmere sweaters with a preppy twist to figure–flattering cinched ribbon tops and sexy panel skirts; from breezy blazers and boleros emblazoned with sequins to the label’s signature Boy Meets Girl® logo collection. Posh yet altogether playful, the line is emblematic of Morgenstern herself who draws her inspiration from the “flapper girls” of the roaring twenties among other creative sources.
In 2008, Ms. Morgenstern’s signature brand was acquired by Oved Apparel, one of the largest makers in the apparel industry and the force behind Mecca, Akademiks and PRPS Jeans. With greater expertise and capital, Boy Meets Girl® will build upon its success in what Ms. Morgenstern deems her “couture comfort” and “chic” basics — t–shirts, tank tops and cozy sweat shirts — as well as develop a collection of immaculately constructed day–to–evening dresses that radiate style.
Boy Meets Girl® has been seen on many fashion–forward TV shows such as Sex & the City, Heroes, America’s Next Top Model, The OC and MTV’s “The Hills”. Ms. Morgenstern’s designs have been featured in major national publications including In Style, Us Weekly, Cosmopolitan, Lucky, People, Teen Vogue, Seventeen, the New York Times, New York Post and WWD. Celebrities also covet the collection for the label’s versatility — Ms. Morgenstern’s clientele reads like a Who’s Who of young Hollywood: Eva Mendes, Michelle Williams, Rachel Bilson, Anne Hathaway, Ali Larter, Hillary Duff, Mischa Barton, Kelly Ripa, Gabrielle Union, Rose McGowan, Vanessa Minnillo, Carmen Electra, Jennifer Garner and Lindsay Lohan.
Boy Meets Girl® is sold in high–end specialty and department stores worldwide including Harvey Nichols, Saks Fifth Avenue and Intuition.

18th Amendment Jeans

18TH AMENDMENT – HIGH QUALITY DESIGN AND FEMININE VINTAGE STYLE Inspired by the roaring 1920s of Prohibition and the coquettish elegance of Hollywood icons such as Rita Hayworth, Marlene Dietrich and Gina Lollabrigida, 18th Amendment has arrived as a celebrated alternative in a market dominated by the standard lowrise skinny fit.Leading international buyers have rushed to snap up their diverse styles, quality detailing and dedication to achieving the perfect fitting jean and have made 18th Amendment jeans a must-have for denim aficianados the world over. The jeans are instantly recognisable with an art-deco wing logo, inspired by the Rolls Royce “Flying Lady”, epitomising 18th Amendment’s high quality design approach and feminine vintage style.”18th Amendment is a blend of modern and vintage fit, finishing and detailing. We wanted to create a denim label that referenced vintage denim in a way that made it fresh, modern and relevant to today.” Rebecca Dawson – 18th Amendment Creative Director

SpoiledBrat are pleased to announce that they are now stocking these fabulous jeans, by 18th Amendment.
The spirit of 18th Amendment denim is derived from the roaring 1920s where the speakeasy cultures were filled with gritty glamour, legnedary creatives and silver screen stars. Each of the denim styles invokes the spirit of their Hollywood counter-parts, icons such as Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth and Gina Lollobrigida are embodied in a modern denim twist. What makes them instantly recognisble is their signature winged art-deco logo, found on every back pocket. Inspired by the elegance of the Rolls Royce ‘Flying Lady.’Launched in Sydney, Australia in February 2006, 18th Amendment was discovered by a colloboration between noted Australian fashion designer Rebecca Dawson and Rachel Rose an international denim importer. 18th Amendment hits a niche in the international jeans market with a blend of vintage styles teamed with modern finishing and detailing.

From the land Down Under, Prohibition in the United States must have seemed like a brilliant idea, inspiring speakeasies and fashionable indulgence—hence the name of cult favorite denim line 18th Amendment. Australian designer Rachel Rose paired with creative director Rebecca Dawson to bring the same kind of refined glamour found in the 1920s to its collection of denim. As one of the first lines to bring back the high waist, this fashion-forward label also embraces clean washes, subtly adorning its denim with signature embroidered wings on the back pockets and a small embroidered star on the front. Borrowing nomenclature from classic movie stars, this season’s styles span the denim spectrum, from high-waisted skinnies to mid-rise flares. We’d rather have a legal cocktail than moonshine any day, but we’d be silly to pass up on a pair (or two) of 18th Amendment’s superflattering jeans. No secret password required.
